Google Allo 11 Hints at Allowing you to Add Members to Group Chats via QR Codes

Earlier today, Google officially announced an update to the Google Allo application that would bring users the ability to create their own sticker packs from selfies using the power of neural networks. That update is now arriving in version 11 of Google Allo, but an APK Teardown of the app reveals that another feature may be on its way: the ability to add friends to a group chat with a QR code.

Although an APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by Google in a future build.

Adding Group Chat Members via QR Codes

Within the latest APK file, we have found several strings and layout files that suggest the ability to add new members to chats through the use of QR codes.

Group QR Code Strings

<string name="add_with_qr_code">Add with QR code</string>
<string name="action_qr_scanner">QR scanner</string>
<string name="group_qr_code_title">Group QR Code</string>
<string name="message_failed_to_generate_qr_code">Failed to generate QR code.</string>
<string name="qr_code_scanner_hint_text">Ready to join? Center the Allo code to scan</string>
<string name="qr_code_scanner_invalid_dialog_title">"That code isn't valid"</string>
<string name="qr_scanner_activity_title">QR scanner</string>
<string name="scan_qr_code_to_join_group">"To add someone to the group,
have them scan this code"</string>

These strings are fairly self-explanatory. You can simply generate a QR code that you can then share with another user. That user can then scan the QR code in their Allo app in order to quickly join the group. This beats having to manually share phone numbers with everyone you want joining a group.

We can see further evidence for this feature coming to Google Allo with various XML files that define the Group QR code activity, as well as the icons used to indicate the QR scanning feature in the app.

</LinearLayout>
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical" android:background="@android:color/transparent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"
xmlns:android="http://ift.tt/nIICcg">
<LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content">
<ImageView android:layout_gravity="center" android:id="@id/qr_code" android:layout_width="@dimen/group_qr_code_size" android:layout_height="@dimen/group_qr_code_size" android:layout_marginTop="@dimen/group_qr_code_margin_top" android:layout_marginBottom="@dimen/group_qr_code_margin_bottom" android:contentDescription="@string/group_qr_code_title" />
</LinearLayout>
<LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="0.0dip" android:layout_weight="1.0">
<TextView android:ellipsize="end" android:gravity="center_horizontal" android:layout_gravity="center" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:text="@string/scan_qr_code_to_join_group" android:maxLines="2" android:lineSpacingExtra="@dimen/group_qr_code_text_extra_spacing" style="@style/GroupQRCodeHintTextStyle" />
</LinearLayout>
</LinearLayout>

Finally, I was able to access the activity in the app where you generate the QR code – showing that this feature is basically almost live.  Of course, since I accessed it from a method other than the default way (which I don’t believe is enabled yet), there’s not actually any QR code that can be generated.

I’ll continue digging around and update this article if I find anything interesting in the live build, or through an APK teardown. If you are looking for this latest release of the Google Allo, you can download it right now over at APKMirror. Follow our APK Teardown tag for more articles like this!

OPPO’s R9s Outsells Samsung Smartphones in Q1 2017

While Android is the king of the mobile operating systems, Apple iPhone 7 was still the best selling individual smartphone of the first quarter of 2017. This is according to research performed by Strategy Analytics. Apple occupies the two top positions in the ranking with iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.  But what’s most surprising is that the OPPO R9s occupied the third place slot – indicating that this smartphone was the best individual selling smartphone among all Android devices for this quarter.

In Q1 2017, global smartphone shipments reached a robust 353.3 million units, according to Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics. Apple’s two top models share 11% of the market. Apple sold almost 39 million units of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

If you thought that the Samsung Galaxy S7 was the most widely sold Android device in the first quarter, you are wrong. According to the report, OPPO sold 8.9 million units of the R9s in Q1 2017. OPPO is a well-known brand in China and India, but for many in the U.S. and Europe this brand is still a mystery. As such, the Oppo R9s’ popularity should be no surprise, as this brand is highly popular in two of the largest markets in the world.

The OPPO R9s is one of the flagship devices of the OEM. It sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, 4 GBs of RAM, 64 GBs of internal storage and a 3,010 mAh battery. It also has a 16-megapixel camera and a 5.5″ Full HD AMOLED screen. While the Oppo R9s is not in the same hardware league as the iPhone 7 or the Samsung Galaxy S7, its lower price makes it more affordable for millions of users. Thus OPPO outnumbered Samsung’s most popular device, the Galaxy J3, by almost three million units. OPPO’s phone is more adapted to the local market and runs  Color OS, which looks similar to Apple’s iOS.

Let’s take a look at the exact sale numbers.

Global Smartphone Shipments by Model (Millions of Units) Q1 ’16 Q1 ’17
1. Apple iPhone 7 0.0 21.5
2. Apple iPhone 7 Plus 0.0 17.4
3. OPPO R9s 0.0 8.9
4. Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) 3.0 6.1
5. Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) 0.0 5.0
Others 330.1 294.4
Total 333.1 353.3

Global Smartphone Marketshare by Model (% of Total) Q1 ’16 Q1 ’17
1. Apple iPhone 7 0.0% 6.1%
2. Apple iPhone 7 Plus 0.0% 4.9%
3. OPPO R9s 0.0% 2.5%
4. Samsung Galaxy J3 (2016) 0.9% 1.7%
5. Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) 0.0% 1.4%
Others 99.1% 83.3%
Total 100% 100%

The results show that Samsung might be one of the most popular phone producers in the Western World, but it still falls behind in China. The top listed Samsung devices are mid-range models. The buyers of those phones either cannot afford or are unwilling to spend ~$750 on the phone. Nevertheless, Apple sells 1 out of 10 phones produced in the world right now.

Stereo Speaker Mod for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+

XDA Senior Member otonieru has come up with a modification which makes it possible to enable stereo sound output on any Galaxy S8 or S8+ smartphone. The mod enables the phone’s earpiece as a secondary speaker to achieve stereo output. Of course, nothing compares to having two equally sized stereo speakers, but it’s still better than having just one speaker. Check out the linked thread for more details.

Guide Helps Nougat ROM Maintainers Merge Camera HAL3 for the OnePlus 2

XDA Senior Member xdvs23 was able to get camera HAL3 working on the OnePlus 2 when running a Nougat ROM. To help out, XDA Senior Member MZO has put together a guide for ROM maintainers (and those who do personal builds) to merge these commits into a Nougat-based ROM. As it is right now, everything is working except portrait thumbnails having green bars (even though the main picture is fine), and RAW pictures are red.
