OPPO’s R9s Outsells Samsung Smartphones in Q1 2017

While Android is the king of the mobile operating systems, Apple iPhone 7 was still the best selling individual smartphone of the first quarter of 2017. This is according to research performed by Strategy Analytics. Apple occupies the two top positions in the ranking with iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.  But what’s most surprising is that the OPPO R9s occupied the third place slot – indicating that this smartphone was the best individual selling smartphone among all Android devices for this quarter.

In Q1 2017, global smartphone shipments reached a robust 353.3 million units, according to Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics. Apple’s two top models share 11% of the market. Apple sold almost 39 million units of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

If you thought that the Samsung Galaxy S7 was the most widely sold Android device in the first quarter, you are wrong. According to the report, OPPO sold 8.9 million units of the R9s in Q1 2017. OPPO is a well-known brand in China and India, but for many in the U.S. and Europe this brand is still a mystery. As such, the Oppo R9s’ popularity should be no surprise, as this brand is highly popular in two of the largest markets in the world.

The OPPO R9s is one of the flagship devices of the OEM. It sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, 4 GBs of RAM, 64 GBs of internal storage and a 3,010 mAh battery. It also has a 16-megapixel camera and a 5.5″ Full HD AMOLED screen. While the Oppo R9s is not in the same hardware league as the iPhone 7 or the Samsung Galaxy S7, its lower price makes it more affordable for millions of users. Thus OPPO outnumbered Samsung’s most popular device, the Galaxy J3, by almost three million units. OPPO’s phone is more adapted to the local market and runs  Color OS, which looks similar to Apple’s iOS.

Let’s take a look at the exact sale numbers.

5. Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016) 0.0% 1.4%

The results show that Samsung might be one of the most popular phone producers in the Western World, but it still falls behind in China. The top listed Samsung devices are mid-range models. The buyers of those phones either cannot afford or are unwilling to spend ~$750 on the phone. Nevertheless, Apple sells 1 out of 10 phones produced in the world right now.
