Nova Launcher has become the go-to aftermarket launcher for many Android users, and for good reason too. With a wide range of customization options and a focus on performance, Nova Launcher has come out on top against stock launchers and even other replacements on the Play Store.
With the latest update of version 5.2, Nova Launcher is bringing Android O style notification badges to the Stable branch. Users on Nova’s Beta channel have already had access to this new feature since beta1, so it is good to see the same being rolled out to all Android users.
Interestingly, notification badges have been a part of Nova Launcher’s functionality since a long time. Available in the form of a separate companion app called TeslaUnread for Nova Launcher, one could configure notification badges in different styles, going beyond the simplistic display style of Android O. So while Nova did receive an update to support the new badge styles, it can also be said that Android received an update to support notification badges after being inspired from 3rd-party launchers.
The complete changelog is as below:
- Android O style notification badges
- Round searchbar style
- Performance improvements
- Minor fixes for Android O
- Changes since v5.2-beta3:
- Minor bug fixes and performance improvements
- Updated translations
To setup the new Android O style notification badges, you will have to grant notification access to Nova Launcher. You can set the size and location of the dots, but that’s about it as far as customization with this particular style goes. The notification badge appears besides icons whenever you have a pending notification from that app and clears off when the notification is handled or cleared.
