Vivo phones to get Android Pie in Q4, possibly starting with Vivo X21

Vivo X21

Vivo devices are pretty solid and modestly priced, but the brand itself isn’t exactly a household name just yet. While they’re widely known in their home China, they’re rather unknown in the western hemisphere. While they still don’t sell in the United States, they’re marketing their phones to gain consumer awareness in the rest of the world. The Vivo NEX S (and its previous concept phone, the Apex) has brought some much-needed international spotlight on the company by featuring a truly bezel-less screen (over 90% screen to body ratio) that drops the notch and goes for a moving front camera module instead. They’re not the top dog when it comes to software though: not only is their software support lackluster in the long term, but Vivo’s Funtouch OS is also a rather heavy OEM skin, modified both aesthetically and functionally, that is often compared to Apple’s iOS operating system.

However, they’re apparently looking to improve in this aspect, as one of their phones, the midrange Vivo X21, received official Android Pie beta builds during the Developer Preview program. Now, the company has confirmed in an email to Android Authority that they’re bringing stable Android 9 to their devices before the end of the year. The company didn’t confirm exactly which devices were going to get the update, but it’s very likely than the Vivo X21 will be one of the first in line for the update since it got beta builds in the past. We’re also guessing flagships like the Vivo NEX S will be getting the update as well.

This spells good news for owners of Vivo devices, as it means that they’ll soon be able to enjoy Android Pie on their phones. While a detailed roadmap for the update has not been released yet, we’ll keep you informed for when it does arrive.
