Google will fix fast charging issue for Pixel/Pixel XL users on Android Pie

Android Pie was officially released last week for the Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL. There are a lot of great new features in Android 9, but not everything is perfect. WiFi scanning throttling is crippling some network apps, the back button in the Recent apps needs fixing, and the original Pixel devices are experiencing a fast charging issue.

The Pixel phones use USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) for fast charging. The charging rate for compatible cables and plugs is 5V/3A, which is what shows the “Charging rapidly” message on the lock screen and Always-on display. Owners of the original 2016 Pixel devices have been reporting problems with this fast charging on Android P builds. It has persisted through the official release of Android Pie, and now Google says a fix is in the works.

The issue is showing its face in several forms. Some say they see the “Charging rapidly” message all the time, no matter which charger they use. Other say it always says “Charging” or “Charging slowly,” even with fast chargers. Many of these people are using the original chargers from Google, not random 3rd-party accessories.

A Google spokesperson told The Verge that they are aware of the issue:

We’re aware of an issue where non-Power Delivery (PD) USB-C chargers no longer rapidly charge the 2016 Pixel and Pixel XL after the upgrade to Android 9 Pie. The 18W rapid charger included in-box is a PD charger and does not exhibit this behavior. We are verifying a fix for non-PD USB-C chargers and will roll it out in the coming weeks.

This is good news for anyone that is having this issue. The Pixel phones don’t have extra features like wireless charging, so it’s important that the features they do have actually work. Fast charging can be very important when you need some extra juice at the end of the day. Keep an eye out for the update soon.
