Xiaomi Redmi Y2 With Dual Cameras Launched in India, MIUI 10 Global Rollout Detailed

At its official launch event in New Delhi, Xiaomi has announced the Xiaomi Redmi Y2, its latest camera-centric smartphone for the Indian market. The direct successor to the last year’s Redmi Y1, the Redmi Y2 is a rebranded version of the Redmi S2 that we exclusively reported back in April before it went official in China. The Redmi Y2 improves upon its predecessor in many areas and packs a new design, improved cameras, and more powerful internals.

As far as the design is concerned, the Redmi Y2 closely resembles the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro — except for a few differences on the back. For instance, the device uses plastic body instead of aluminum and features discrete antenna lines for a more seamless look. On the back, the device retains the Redmi Note 5’s implementation of the dual-camera setup and the fingerprint sensor while the front houses a 5.99-inch 1280 x 720 display with an aspect ratio of 18:9.

Under the hood, the Redmi Y2 is powered by the tried and tested Snapdragon 625, making it the fifth Xiaomi smartphone to be launched with this 14nm-based, octa-core SoC. While the inclusion of something like Snapdragon 630 would have been appreciated, the Snapdragon 625 is still a step up from the Snapdragon 435 on the Redmi Y1 and should be more than enough for the targeted audience.

The main highlight of the Redmi Y2 is its dual-camera setup on the back, which the company says is the same as the one on the Redmi Note 5 Pro. The setup is composed of a 12MP primary sensor with larger 1.25-micron pixel size and a secondary 5MP depth sensor. The front shooter, meanwhile, is a 16MP sensor with an LED flash and offers features like Auto HDR, AI Beautiful 4.0, and AI Portrait Selfie for a better selfie experience.

On the software front, the Redmi Y2 comes running Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box with Xiaomi’s MIUI 9.5 running on top. The battery is unchanged from the last year’s model but the inclusion of a more efficient SoC and MIUI system optimizations means the device should provide longer battery life compared to its predecessor.

Other highlights of the Redmi Y2 includes a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, a 3.5mm audio jack, hybrid dual SIM slot, Bluetooth 4.2, and an IR blaster.

The Redmi Y2 comes in two variants and three colors (Gold, Rose Gold, and Dark Grey) to choose from. The base model offers 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, while the top model packs 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The device will be an Amazon India exclusive just like its predecessor and will officially go on sale starting 12 June at 12pm (IST). The device will also be available from select offline partners at a later date As for pricing, the base model starts at RS. 9,999 ($150) while the top model will set you back RS. 12,999 ($195).

MIUI 10

The launch event also saw the global launch of MIUI 10. The latest version of Xiaomi’s custom skin brings many new features and improvements to the table. The major highlights of MIUI 10 include a faster UI, redesigned Recents screen and Quick Settings panel, better support for 18:9 and 19:9 displays, support for AI portrait mode on single camera devices, and more.

The full list of Xiaomi devices that will be receiving the MIUI 10 update are as follows:
