It has been a rocky few weeks for Facebook. One of the big scandals in the Android world was when Facebook was caught scraping call logs and message data. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for Facebook’s problems. A recent report stated Facebook had retracted messages from Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook Messenger conversations.
“Unsending” a message is not a feature available to regular Facebook users. To most people, this seemed like a power used solely to remove damaging evidence, but Facebook is claiming they have been working on this feature for all users. Until the Unsend feature rolls out to everyone, Facebook says they won’t use it on any more of Zuckerberg’s messages.
Facebook issued a statement to address the situation and the Unsend feature:
“We have discussed this feature several times. And people using our secret message feature in the encrypted version of Messenger have the ability to set a timer — and have their messages automatically deleted. We will now be making a broader delete message feature available.”
The Secret Messaging feature does include an expiration timer, but Zuckerberg’s messages were removed from normal conversations well after the fact. Facebook does not have the trust of most people right now. “Announcing” the plans for a new feature after getting caught using it on the CEO doesn’t look good. Facebook did not give a timeframe of when to expect the Unsend feature to be available to all users.
