We’re less than three weeks away from the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+. Samsung will unveil its new flagship devices on February 25, a day before Mobile World Congress 2018, and the company’s press invites hint that the smartphones will emphasize camera performance. One feature that has barely been talked about, though, is the rumored new Dex Station — this time called the DeX Pad — that will launch alongside the S9 and S9+ but a new leak shows us what the accessory will look like.
We’ve been learning about the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ lately, and more and more details are coming to light as we get approach launch day. We’ve heard a lot about the devices’ hardware, including their battery capacities and camera specs. We’ve also seen press renders of both phones, including a recent leak that showed the Galaxy S9+ equipped with a dual camera setup on the back.
We’ve heard about a couple of new software features that Samsung will undoubtedly demonstrate on stage, too, if they are ready for prime time ahead by then. However, one of the first big rumors about the Galaxy S9 and S9+ was that they’d go on sale alongside a “backward-compatible DeX docking station” that’d lay flat on a desk or table, unlike the current-gen vertically-oriented Dex Dock.
This week, Evan Blass at VentureBeat — the same reporter who uncovered evidence of the new backwards-compatible DeX docking station — uploaded a couple press renders that show us what it will look like. Not only will it work with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, but it’s also said to work with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, as well.
It’s called the DeX Pad, and it lets you use the smartphone’s display as a touchpad or a virtual keyboard in Samsung’s DeX desktop interface.

Since the goal of Samsung’s DeX accessories are to enable you to use your smartphone as a computer with nothing more than a monitor, the DeX Pad makes a lot of sense — the last thing you want to worry about is lugging around a mouse or keyboard, and it effectively stands in for those peripherals.
There any isn’t pricing or availability information for the DeX Pad yet (the current-gen DeX dock costs $150), but we’re expecting to learn more in the coming weeks.
