Samsung to Launch the Galaxy On7 Prime in India on Amazon in January

Samsung used to dominate the Indian smartphone market, but the encroachment of the Chinese smartphone vendors in the country has changed things for the South Korea-based smartphone giant. Xiaomi, for instance, has experienced growth to the point where it’s now tied with Samsung for the top market spot, according to research firm IDC.

Samsung, of course, is doing everything it can to protect its lead. In 2015, the company launched the affordable Galaxy On smartphone series in India in order to better compete with Chinese original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and Samsung currently sells the Galaxy On5 Pro, the Galaxy On7 Pro, and the Galaxy On Max in India. Now, a report from IANS states that the company’s planning to launch a new device in the series, the Galaxy On7 Prime, in the country during the second week of January.

The Galaxy On7 Prime will be an Amazon India exclusive, and will come with 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB of storage.  It’s said to have a metal unibody design that’s just 8mm thickness, a 5.5-inch Full HD display, and a starting price around Rs. 15,000 (about $236).

SamMobile discovered that the phone’s already listed on Samsung’s UAE website, and that the purchase link points to Souq, an e-commerce platform in the Middle East. The specifications corroborate the ones put forth in the IANS report, with the exception of the front camera resolution: the IANS report mentions 13MP, whereas the Samsung UAE listing states an 8MP front camera.

The Galaxy On7 Prime’s product listing on the Samsung UAE website describes the device as having a 5.5-inch Full HD PLS TFT display, an octa-core processor of unknown type clocked at 1.6GHz, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a fingerprint sensor, a 13MP primary camera, and an 8MP front camera. (Both cameras have an f/1.9 aperture.) The device reportedly has a 3300mAh battery, a metal unibody construction, and is available in black and gold colors.

The 3GB/32GB variant is listed at 729 AED ($200) on Souq.com, and it’s worth noting that as now, there’s no product page for the 4GB/32GB variant.

We expect to learn more details about the Galaxy On7 Prime at its India launch.
