If you’re into music, you’ve probably visited the SoundCloud website or used its app before. For those of you who aren’t familiar, SoundCloud is a huge social media network for music producers, DJs, and the like to share their music and other related creations with the world. Those who listen to music on the platform can receive suggestions from a machine learning algorithm of what to listen to next. For a while, SoundCloud’s fate was in jeopardy until a massive cash investment of $169.5 million was poured into the company by The Raine Group and investment firm Temasek Holdings. With this came some changes including a focus on monetary gain and a brand new CEO who previously worked at Vimeo. SoundCloud is now looking towards a redesign as a next step in the right direction to return to glory.
SoundCloud has slowly been trying to rebuild its popularity for a while. With the investment obviously came a smarter usage of money, and a business model that is actually sustainable in the long-term. It meant that fans of the service could continue to enjoy it, but with a pretty big catch. That catch was that some songs were not available for general listening without a SoundCloud Go subscription, and along with that unofficial remixes and mashups began to be taken down due to copyright complaints coupled.
Now SoundCloud is redesigning their application, bringing a new home screen which aims to draw users closer to the content available across the platform. The new app provides playlists which are tailored to the user listening and providing links to others. SoundCloud calls these “smart playlists” and some examples include a “best of 2017” or “artists to look forward to in 2018.”
It’s simplistic, but it works. It’s somewhat reminiscent of Spotify’s recommended playlists and how they work. The update should be live now, so if you’re interested go check it out!
