Ticket Proceeds from the OnePlus 5T Launch Event will benefit F-Droid

The OnePlus 5T was officially unveiled today at an event in Brooklyn, New York. It offers a 6.01″ 18:9 Samsung-made OLED display along with top-tier hardware specifications including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC and up to 8GBs of RAM and 128GBs of internal storage. Fans of OnePlus had the opportunity to see the unveiling live in person, provided they were willing to pay $40 for a ticket. Those who attended received a swag bag with lots of goodies inside. It’s rare for device unveiling events to be open to the public, and it’s also rare to see entry fees at these events. While unusual, the entry fee not only nets you a swag bag and a $40 off coupon for the OnePlus 5T, but it also goes to a good cause: funding F-Droid.

F-Droid is a software repository that acts as an alternative to the Google Play Store, much like our very own XDA Labs. The big difference, however, is that F-Droid’s main repository only accepts free and open-source software (FOSS). F-Droid is the go-to source for any user who wishes to run FOSS on their Android smartphones.

The Android app recently received a major Material Design make-over and is a very popular source for users who wish to forego Google apps and services. You’ll often find F-Droid bundled with microG, the free alternative to Google Play Services, in certain AOSP-based ROMs such as this unofficial LineageOS fork.

F-Droid is entirely maintained by volunteers, so contributions such as these can go a long way in ensuring that the team can devote time and resources to maintaining their website, application, and repositories. Anyone looking to contribute to F-Droid, whether it’s with your translation skills, development knowledge, or monetary support, should check out their contributions page here for more information.
