OnePlus 5 Android Oreo Beta will be Launched this Month, OTA in Early 2018

Today is the official unveiling of the OnePlus 5T, but OnePlus also has some exciting news for customers of its previous devices. On stage, the company announced that the first open beta for the OnePlus 5 Android Oreo update will launch this month. Furthermore, they announced that the OTA update for all users would roll out sometime in early 2018.

The OnePlus 5 was one of our favorite smartphones this year, despite its many controversies. It launched with Android 7.1 Nougat on board, but users have been waiting to hear when OnePlus would bring the Android 8.0 Oreo update to its devices. Surprisingly, OnePlus has already released an Android Oreo open beta for its previous generation OnePlus 3/3T devices. OnePlus 5 fans were wondering if that means their Oreo update was imminent, and indeed earlier this very month an Oreo build from the closed beta group was leaked.

But today, we finally have a timeline of when to expect the Oreo update for the OnePlus 5. Though OnePlus wasn’t very clear on what constitutes “early 2018”, at least we won’t have to wait long for the open beta update since there are only 2 weeks left in November.

As for what we can expect, you’ll have all of the usual enhancements in Android 8.0 Oreo including the Autofill Framework, picture-in-picture mode support, background app limitations for better battery life, and more. One change we’re most excited about is under-the-hood. It’s the support for the OverlayManagerService (OMS), the same theme framework that powers Substratum. Thanks to this, users running OxygenOS can fully theme their phone without needing root so long as they install the Andromeda add-on for Substratum.

Once the Android Oreo update for the OnePlus 5 officially launches, we’ll be sure to dig through the update to find anything new in the software. Stay tuned to the XDA Portal for more news on OnePlus, as today is bound to be full of exciting developments.
