Xiaomi Sold Over 10 Million Phones in September 2017

Xiaomi, among other OEMs, experienced a period of lower sales volume during Q1 2017 in China. The same growth pattern wasn’t seen in India in the last year, though, as the company is smashing sales records with the release of the Redmi Note 4 and partnering with Google for the creation of the Xiaomi Mi A1. They’ve been on their way up with no signs of stopping. Once called “The Apple of China,” Xiaomi is making a comeback and according to the CEO, Lei Jun, the company has sold over 10 million devices in September alone.

The comeback can largely be attributed to its massive rise in India, generating $1 billion in revenue alone from the country. Being able to grow so huge in the market and increase its sales have provided more revenue for Xiaomi to work with and a lot more time to improve its products. Not only that, without these increases in sales it may not have been possible to partner with Google for the Android One program and produce the Xiaomi Mi A1. To put it into perspective, estimates say that demand in India for their phones has grown over 400 percent.

Xiaomi’s “phenomenal comeback,” according to Neil Shah at Counterpoint Research, is caused by its growing market share and expansion into new territories coupled with an extremely large uptake of its devices in India. In comparison, Xiaomi dropped to fifth place in China in terms of sales after being first in 2015, once seated comfortably behind only Apple in Q1 2016.

The turnaround for the Chinese company not only shows a move to take a strong grasp of the Indian phone market but a 9% market share globally of the smartphone market, up from 4% in September 2016. In one year Xiaomi has more than doubled their market share of the global smartphone market, and it seems the Chinese OEM has more room to grow.
