Turing Announces Partnership with TCL to Produce the $1,099 Turing Phone Appassionato

Turing Robotic Industries (TRI) has announced a partnership with TCL Communication Ltd, the company behind the Alcatel brand as well as the company who now manufactures the hardware used as BlackBerry devices. This partnership is aimed at producing the “world’s first mass-produced ‘Liquidmorphium‘ smartphone”.

The “revolutionary” Turing Phone Appassionato will build up on the success of the original Turing phone and will be constructed out of ‘Liquidmorphium’ and will feature ‘diamond-like-carbon’ coating which will provide a scratch resistant surface that feels like ceramic. The device will also protect the user’s information through TRI’s ‘robust mobile defense platform’, fully integrated into the Android 7.1.1 OS. The only part of the press release that was immediately recognizable and understandable was that the device will be powered by the Qualcomm MSM8996SG-AC SoC, or in other words, the Snapdragon 821.

The Turing Phone Appassionato will also feature ‘amplified intelligence’ with a ‘uniquely dedicated enhanced-concierge service’. Turing describes ‘Amplified Intelligence’ as the process which uses artificial intelligence to supplement human intelligence in making decisions and choices. The enhanced-concierge service is named “Sir ALAN”, which will utilize an AI engine to provide a finely tuned, relevant lifestyle and business recommendations for its users.

The press release for the Turing Phone Appassionato is chock full of marketing-speak and buzzwords, and tells us very little about the device despite its length. When you consider the price of the device, you know these buzzwords are necessary because the price is a hard sell. The Elite Edition Turing Phone Appassionato PX8 (a fancy way to address the base variant) will retail at $1,099, while the Premium-Luxury Edition Turing Phone Appassionato GX8 will retail $1,599. These variants will start shipping by September 2017.

Before you start chalking up plans to mortgage your property for this device, know that the company behind the Turing Phone is infamous for over-promising and under-delivering. Turing Robotic Industries came into the limelight with their ‘unhackable’ Turing Phone in Q2 2015, also known to be more courageous than Apple by foregoing the 3.5mm headphone jack back then. Pre-orders of the device began sometime in Q3 2015, with shipments expected in late 2015. The shipment date was delayed and promised for Q1 2016, but the phones finally shipped out in July 2016. Seeing how there were only 10,000 of these phones to ever be produced, it is no surprise that we haven’t heard much about them ever since.

The Turing Phone Appassionato, if it is indeed a product that will materialize and reach the hands of consumers on time, can’t really be compared to flagship smartphones despite its hefty price tag. It will be a luxury smartphone, and what you will be paying for is the exclusivity to own one. Who needs features when you can be limited edition?
