Sony has been dwindling down in popularity recently, partly due to their pricing strategy but also thanks to a mix of other factors. A rethinking in their strategy is the need of the hour, and Sony appears to be starting with an aspect that they have stagnated on for a while: the design of their flagships.
Some hot news is rolling in on this end, as GSMArena has laid hands on exclusive pics to an upcoming Sony device, dubbed the Sony Xperia F8331 and rumored to be Sony’s next flagship this year.
Right off the bat, you can see that the device in hand is not a typical Sony Xperia Z (or X) series device. The characteristic shape of Sony flagship is not present here, as the device pictured bears flat top and bottom frames but curves on the left and right side. If you noticed the bezels, you are not alone, as they indeed appear to be substantial on the top and bottom. The front of the device will bear a screen bigger than that on the Xperia X Performance (5″) but still being limited to FHD. The picture also shows the front stereo speaker setup, the NFC sticker denoting antenna placement and the front camera (odd), which by the way, is rumored to boast of 4K video recording.
The back of the device is also quite against the feel and flow of recent Sony flagships. The rear appears to be brushed metal, with a plastic panel on the bottom for the antennae. The camera layout also has received a refresh.
The bottom of the device bears the USB Type-C port, which will be a first for Sony. The front of the device bears the 3.5mm headphone jack.
The Sony Xperia F8831 certainly marks a shift for Sony in the design department, as it looks more like the late Nokia N9 than the Xperia Z5 Performance. There’s a fair few firsts for Sony in this device, so we expect a good overall package. Further details of the device are not yet known at this stage, but according to GSMArena, the device could make an appearance at IFA in September.
