Samsung Set To Launch A High-End Folder Phone in Korea

Flip phones are still very popular in some parts of the world, apparently. According to ETNews, Samsung is set to launch a new Folder phone in South Korea. The Folder phone is known as model number SM-W2017 and it will have features taken from other flagship devices of the Korean OEM.

The information of the premiere has been anonymously given by one of the officials of the local telecom carriers in Korea speaking to ETNews.

The phone is expected to have a 4.2-inch dual OLED display screens. Samsung will reportedly use the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor clocked at 1.4 GHz, 64 GBs of internal storage and 2,300 mAh battery. There is no mention about the RAM capacity. The phone will also feature a 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front-facing camera. It will be running Android as its operating system, though information on the exact Android version is not yet available.

According to the source, the Korean OEM will implement features such as fingerprint scanning for Samsung Pay, include Samsung Knox, and feature dust resistance. That list may imply that the folder phone is aimed at customers in the business area. The aforementioned features can already be found in the Galaxy S series.

The pricing is still unknown, but the source believes that the phone will be priced higher than any other folder phones.

The SM-W2017 is not the only folder device that Samsung offer. The company plans to launch the Galaxy Folder 2 in the upcoming months. The phone will be equipped with 3.8-inch screen, Snapdragon 425 processor, and 1950 mAh battery. An estimated price tag will be set between 200,000 and 300,000 won ($175-$265).

Will these phones be available worldwide? It’s hard to predict, but we aren’t sure that there are a lot of fans of flip phones here at XDA. Perhaps nostalgia plays a small part here?

Rumor: Specs of the T-Mobile Self-Branded REVVL T1 Phone Leaks

Some wireless carriers feel they should have their own self-branded smartphone so they can sell it in stores. The reason behind this could be because of a higher profit margin, or maybe they just feel they can offer something their customers want more than the competition can. Whatever the case, we’ve seen this from Verizon Wireless with the Droid series (which was made by Motorola), and now there’s a rumor going around that T-Mobile will be doing this as well.

A couple of weeks ago, Android Authority said they received some marketing material that stated how T-Mobile will redefine how you pay for your device plan each month. At the time, they didn’t have much else to go on, and said it would be “a value-based proposition.” Their impression from the material they received was that T-Mobile would be offering a phone with the features of a $650 – $850 smartphone, but with a price tag that is much lower.

Yesterday, however, Android Authority received some additional information on this T-Mobile branded smartphone. It seems the name of this new smartphone series from T-Mobile will be called REVVL, and it will “offer premium specs without the premium price tag.” Along with this new information about the series name, we’re also told that there will be three different smartphones released: REVVL T1, REVVL T2, and the REVVL T3 PRO.

The REVVL T1 is said to be manufactured by Alcatel’s parent company TCL (the same company making phones under BlackBerry’s brand name now) and it will be a mid-range device. Android Authority‘s sources are telling them it will have a 5.5″ 1080p display with a fingerprint scanner, 3,000mAh capacity battery, 13MP rear-facing camera, and a 5MP front-facing camera with a flash and the ability to capture wide-angle images. It should launch with Android 7.x Nougat, but it’s unclear if the UI will be heavily modified from stock Android or not.

Report: Xiaomi Mi 6 Facing Supply Shortage of Snapdragon 835 chips and Ceramic Shells

Xiaomi launched its latest flagship device, the Xiaomi Mi 6, in China just last month. As has always been the case with Xiaomi’s smartphones, the device packs best-in-class hardware at an attractive price point. The device is already on sale in its home country, with a release expected in other markets in the coming months. Early reports suggest the device has been well received in China, with flash sales resulting in units flying off the shelves just seconds after the device goes on sale.

However, it appears that the device is facing a supply shortage. According to a report from MyDrivers, the Xiaomi Mi 6 is facing a supply shortage of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chips as well as Ceramic shells which the company has used on a special edition of the Mi 6.

Shortage of the Snapdragon 835 chipsets shouldn’t come as a surprise as we already know that Samsung reportedly has the first claim on the Qualcomm’s latest chip for its Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ devices. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 SoC is built on Samsung’s 10nm Fin FET process, so it’s hard not to see why when the South Korean smartphone giant has first dibs over the supply of Snapdragon 835 chips.

Apart from chip shortage, Xiaomi is also facing a shortage for the Ceramic body, which the company is using on a special edition of the Mi 6. There is an increasingly high demand for the Ceramic variant of the Xiaomi Mi 6. The Ceramic edition comes with 128 GBs of internal storage and costs RMB 2999 ($435), which is $15 more compared to the standard 128 GB edition ($420). Ceramic has the feel and glossiness of glass and the heaviness of metal, but it’s also incredibly scratch resistant. So it’s understandable that for such a small price increase, many consumers would probably be happy to shell out little extra to get a better build for their smartphone.

With the Mi 6 already facing tight supply in its home country, it’s unclear if this will also delay its release in other markets such as India.

Amazon’s Touchscreen Echo Show Announced; Alexa updated with Voice Calls

Just a few days ago we presented leaks of the mysterious Amazon speaker. Now we can finally confirm them, as the device was officially announced yesterday. The first Amazon Echo Show units will ship to customers in late June.

We finally know what’s inside of the speaker. Amazon is packing an Intel Atom x5-Z8350 processor into the Echo Show. It will also have a 7″ touchscreen, a 5 MP camera and dual 2-inch stereo speakers. Everything will be fit inside the 7.4” x 7.4” x 3.5” frame and it will weigh just over 1 kg. Finally, Amazon Echo Show will have dual-band (2.4 and 5 GHz) 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. The latter allows connecting external devices (eg. speakers). As expected, the device comes in two color variants.

In the following video, we can see the speaker in action. The device can be used for video calls and various other tasks. It can play videos, music, or even control the Bluetooth devices. Everything is just a few voice commands away.

Amazon will also release an updated Alexa Skills Set. It will be useful for developers, as they will be able to add touchscreen interfaces to their Alexa skills.

Speaking of Alexa: Amazon has announced a couple of features that will come to their voice assistant. Users will have the ability to call their friends and family that use an Echo device or the Alexa App. Calls can be initiated or answered by voice commands. Finally, Amazon has also announced a feature called Drop In. This feature is reserved for your closest family and friends. For example, when a user wants to drop in to check on an elderly relative, let the family know it’s time for dinner, or check on the baby in the nursery, Drop In can be activated on specified devices.

Amazon Echo Show is available for pre-order right now. The device costs $229.99. If you are planning to get two speakers, Amazon has a discount coupon for $100. The code you need to enter is SHOW2PACK which brings the total price down to $359.98.

Spectrum is an Open-Source Kernel Manager for Users

To get the best performance out of your kernel, you’ll sometimes need a good kernel manager app to tweak the settings on the fly. But many times, these options can be overly complicated for the average user to understand. To that end, XDA Recognized Developer frap129 has released an open-source application aimed at allowing developers to create profiles to serve to their users. Kernel developers can integrate support for this app and create their own profiles that users can then select with a tap of a button.

Magisk Module to Enable SDCardFS on Android Nougat

XDA Forum Moderator The Flash has whipped up a Magisk module which enables SDCardFS on any device running Android 7.x as long as the kernel has support for it. In case you’re wondering, SDCardFS is a new filesystem which will replace Filesystem in Userspace (FUSE), and is said to significantly reduce I/O overhead and will also prevent issues like time stamp errors and more. Head over to the linked thread for more details.
